To the north can be found Hadrian's Wall, the Northumberland National Park and Kielder Water.

To the west can be found the Pennine scarp overlooking the Eden Valley to the nearby towering Lake District National Park.

To the south can be found Herriot Country and the treasures of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

To the east can be found the railway heritage centres of Shildon and Darlington, plus the world-famous Durham Cathedral and Castle.

To the north-east can be found the excellent shopping experiences to be found at Newcastle-upon-Tyne and the Metro Centre.
